Midway through the dipping process and the 6-Series coupe gets ready for a pass through the electrically-charged anti-corrosion baths..
In august 1977 this changed when only the steel body shell where made by Karmann and then shipped to BMW's plant in Dingolfing.
Dingolfing serves to top up 3-Series production, making about 250 a day in addition to the 550 or so that they can make in Munich. On the same lines as the occasional 6-Series, Dingolfing's 14,400 workers average about 500 of the 5-Series saloons and about 200 of the range-leading Sevens. So the 6-Series coupes are very much the low production centre of attention.
The main assembly halls at Dingolfing where the fast workers demonstrate their versatility on the 5-, 6- and 7-Series that pass along the same lines.
A six cylinder engine trundles along the track to join a Federal 633 CSi.
There are 800 quality control personnel to satisfy, 30 checkpoints to pass and separate department that pays individual attention to coupes, with slightly different 1,5 hour tests for every M635 CSi imposed. Soon each coupe is likely to recieve similar treatment instead of the present varying percentage, althrough all have ten minutes operational check on a rolling road.
Note the soze of the gearbox, attachment of propshaft and full suspension / ventilated disc brake assembly that has already taken place, before the power train is offered beneath the coupe.
